In a pre-season match as part of Manchester United's Tour 2024, Rasmus Højlund scored his first goal for the club, wearing the number 9 shirt. Despite this early success, United lost 2-1 to Arsenal in regular time but managed to secure a 4-3 victory in a penalty shootout.
Højlund's goal came just over nine minutes into the game. After receiving a pass from Marcus Rashford, he powered through Arsenal's defense and slipped the ball through the legs of goalkeeper Karl Hein. Unfortunately, Højlund's appearance was cut short due to a possible injury after he appeared to catch his studs in the turf. Hannibal Mejbri replaced him.
Arsenal equalized through Gabriel Jesus, who scored despite being in an offside position, as VAR was not in use. United almost regained the lead shortly after, but Mason Mount's powerful shot was saved by Hein.
Both teams made several substitutions at half-time, with United fielding a mix of experienced players and promising academy graduates. Notably, new signing Lenny Yoro was replaced by Rhys Bennett due to an injury scare, and Will Fish and Toby Collyer also saw playing time.
United's goalkeeper Andre Onana, who played the entire match, made a crucial save to deny Leandro Trossard and keep the score level. The match ended 1-1, and United went on to win the penalty shootout 4-3.
